Y3 Rowan's Edible Rocks!!! 7.10.22

This week Rowan class have continued learning about rocks. They investigated how the 3 types of natural rock are formed – Sedimentary, Metamorphic and Igneous. They realised they couldn’t make real rocks as that takes a long time. So instead they made ‘edible rocks’! Firstly they used blue fondant icing for the water bed, sprinkles for the fossils of dead plants and animals, chocolate mousse for the mud and vanilla yoghurt for the sediment to create their own Sedimentary rocks. Demonstrating how Sedimentary rocks are formed from deposits settling at the bottom of seas, lakes and rivers. Then they made Igneous rocks using chocolate buttons, broken biscuits and mini marshmallows, they then heated the mixture and cooled it to demonstrate how igneous rocks are formed when molten) rock or magma is cooled. Finally they used three layers of coloured fondant icing and the heat and pressure from their hands to demonstrate how Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have been changed by heat and pressure. They could clearly see the swirls or layers where the rocks have been pushed together. Rowan class couldn’t wait to eat the rocks they made!!!!
