On Wednesday, Miss Palfrey and Miss Pritchard went to a ‘Talk for Reading’ course. It was informative and has given them many fantastic ideas to implement across school.
They started the day off talking about the importance of reading and how reading enjoyment is central to development. ‘Reading for pleasure is the single most important indicator of a child’s future success’(OECD)
Although teaching of vocabulary is already embedded within our school, they explored the importance of teaching vocabulary further. Reflecting on a variety of strategies for explicitly teaching vocabulary and why it needs to be done.
After this, they focused in on the comprehension side of reading looking at the core skills of teaching comprehension and exploring book talk.
The most positive thing is our school has established a strong reading culture and wish to continue this.
