Garlic 'Scapes'

These strange loop-the-loop pods are found on the garlic plants in the orchard. They are called "scapes" and grow into flowers which contain hundreds of tiny garlic bulbs (or "bulbils") to create new plants. But, gardeners usually remove the scapes before they flower as this improves the quality of the bulb growing under the soil. The scapes don't go to waste though because they can be used in cooking to flavour pizza toppings, make pesto and garlic butter. Yum!
