Message from the Headteacher, Tim Hughes

September 2024

Welcome to St Margaret’s Academy

I feel very privileged to be the Headteacher of this happy and successful school. The ethos and values are well-established. Children are nurtured and cared for to help them thrive in this sometimes stressful world. The adults enjoy working here and form a dedicated group of professionals who are determined to make a difference to children’s lives and outcomes. As a staff group, I know we feel proud to work here with our wonderful pupils and supportive parents.

We use the following vision as a guide to remind us why we do what we do:

‘We want ourselves and the children in our care to be successful, resilient and inquisitive learners who are happy and well-equipped to participate positively in the community and wider society.’

A major part of our work is the pastoral support we provide and we have a whole-staff approach to developing strong relationships with all children. We took part in the Alex Timpson Attachment and Trauma programme in conjunction with Oxford University and continue with ongoing work and training.  We have been awarded the Silver Mental Health Award for Schools from Leeds Beckett University.

Teachers think carefully to design a curriculum that takes advantage of the unique opportunities the English Riviera provides as part of its dedication as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Our Curriculum Information page has a short slide show, titled Torbay, that reminds us of the stunning area we live in. You can also find further detail to our curriculum here. On our Curriculum in Action page you can view some of the learning opportunities that take advantage of our locality.

We offer excellent sporting opportunities, led by our Specialist PE Teacher Mr Mayling, that have been recognised by the achievement of the Platinum Games Award; the top standard awarded by the government. We have also achieved the Healthy Schools Gold Award . Have a look on our Sports Blog to read more detail.

A Bronze Soil Association Award recognises the high quality of school meals that are cooked on site using local produce.

One of the unique inclusive parts to St Margaret's Academy is our Hearing Support Centre staffed by a specialist teacher of the deaf and specialist teaching assistants. Children with a hearing impairment attend from across the bay. Staff and children across the school take part in British Sign Language.

Over the course of their primary school life, children here achieve well, especially in Reading. In 2024 we were proud to achieve a prestigious Reading Mark from the Open University for our work on helping children read for pleasure.

There is a strong partnership between home and school. For example, our PTA raised close to £20,000 last year to support us with curriculum improvements (featured on the BBC) and with special free events and experiences for the children.

Children enjoy coming to school and visitors comment on the lovely atmosphere.

We have a strong group of school trustees who work closely with us to help ensure we do the best job possible for the children in our care.

If you would like to see the school in action, you are very welcome to visit and can make an appointment via the school office.
